Fashion in the 1940's
Fashion in the 1940's was not as valuable as it is now.World War 2 took place in the year 1940's. Women would usually work in a factory or a farm. Men would wear suits made out of rationed materials. 'It became much more the norm to wear trousers as your clothes had to be practical if you were working in a factory or an farm' This quote shows that they would wear trousers whilst making practical clothes. 'Leather and petrol rationing meant that thick cork wedge and sturdy shoes were the most practical so we could walk in comfort' This quote mentions that thick shoes were more practical to wear because it was easier for the women to walk in comfort, so leather and petrol were rationed so this meant they had to share the leather equally on the other hand clothes was a major thing at that time so they had to make, do and mend which meant they could either make something new, repairing the existing clothes they have at the moment or do something with it like adding something of their own and recreating it. In 50 years of everyday fashion magazine it mentions about clothes which had to be made mended or recreating and they also mention why it was hard which was because of the world war.'As war shortages bit harder, decorating our clothes with unnecessary pleats, buttons, bows, belts, extra pockets, fancy stitching and embroidery was deemed an unpatriotic and eventually made illegal. They would add pleats add extra pockets and bows and fancy stitching. So in women wouldn't throw there clothes away.
